MALE BREAST REDUCTION

WHAT IS MALE BREAST REDUCTION?

This is a very popular procedure designed to treat a condition called gynecomastia or enlarged male breasts. The procedure reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours, leaving you with a very masculine chest. You will be proud to take your shirt off at the beach!

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW?

Abnormal growth of your chest tissue leaving you with enlarged breasts can be caused by a number of different factors – hormone changes, aging, weight loss, weight gain, genetics, medications, medical conditions, illegal drug use, and alcohol use. To maximize your outcome, you should be close to your ideal weight, be in good health, and, if you are a smoker, quit smoking before having the procedure performed.

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE INVOLVE?

There are a variety of different ways the procedure can be performed depending on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed. All require general anesthesia. The procedure typically takes two hours to perform and you will go home the same day with a compression garment that you will leave in place for the first week.

HOW LONG IS RECOVERY AND WHEN CAN I RESUME MY NORMAL ACTIVITIES?

You will experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising after the surgery. This can be minimized with pain medication and rest. You will be seen back in the office one week after the procedure and sutures will be removed if necessary. You will continue to wear your compression garment, except when showering, for three more weeks. Most people are ready to return to all activities after four weeks. A return to work can be as early as a week after your surgery, depending on your profession.
